Wednesday 5th February Seafood Producers, Suppliers, Buyers, Investors and Stakeholders vested in Seafood Souq’s mission to revolutionise the industry came together for our very first Annual General Meeting; and afterwards an annual get-together to celebrate all of our achievements over the past year, give insight into the industry and bring together many of the different people and businesses involved throughout the Seafood Supply Chain.

SFS Trace — Dive into the story of your Seafood. Over the past year there’s been an industry wide push for traceability in the Seafood sector for many good intentions; encouraging more sustainable practices, food safety, transparency for buyers/end consumers and to avoid mislabelling to name just a few.

It’s taken sitting down and pausing for a moment to write this blog to actually realise how far we’ve come in this year alone; what these exciting milestones mean for us going into the New Year and how fortunate we are with our team and Seafood Souq advocates.

Sahab Smart Solutions, a digital innovation company that is part of Sharjah Asset Management’s portfolio, today announced that it has partnered with Seafood Souq to begin work on a digital solution for Sharjah’s Seafood Market, Souq Al Jubail.

Fish & fish products are some of the most traded food items in the world today; with the UAE leading regional per capita seafood consumption at 24kg per year — 5kg higher than the global average.

I recently attended the EATDXB event, hosted by Bull & Roo that brought together foodies, independent restaurateurs, chefs and interested consumers — It was enlightening to see a movement like this in Dubai and witness such a passion for food being discussed by key players in the industry.

Years of learnings and nearly 12 months of dedicated work from a team passionate to improve the Seafood industry has brought us to this moment. The launch of Seafood Souq.

There’s an unfortunate reality occurring globally where seafood is treated as a simple commodity by business buyers and end consumers. The fault of this does not lie with any particular individual or group but is part of a larger issue with how the majority of seafood is bought and sold globally.
