ICV E-Logbook
How ICV Africa replaced paper logbooks, reduced admin time, and became MSC certified with SFS E-Logbook
3 days saved
Per trip in paperwork and compliance submission
MSC certification achieved
First South African pole-and-line tuna fishery to meet the MSC Standard
The Challenge
ICV Africa, one of South Africa’s largest tuna pole-and-line fisheries, needed to scale operations and comply with new traceability and sustainability regulations. Outdated paper-based systems made it difficult to keep pace with regulatory demands and blocked access to key export markets.
- Extensive paper-based compliance
Fishermen had to manually complete A3- sized paper logbooks and landing forms for every trip. - Manual data entry delays
Onshore clerks digitised information after trips ended, introducing bottlenecks and errors. - Complex permit and license management
Tracking HACCP certifications and permits for 50+ vessels across Excel was inefficient and high-risk. - Low technology adoption
With no real-time visibility, operations struggled to meet the traceability expectations of international markets.

Our Solution
Seafood Souq deployed SFS Fisheries, the first GDST-compliant digital logbook and fisheries management suite tailored to ICV Africa’s tuna pole-and-line operations. Our solution included:
- E-Logbook App
Skippers log trips and catch data in real time. The app auto-detects location, manages licenses, and generates pre-filled compliance forms to reduce administrative burden. - Fisheries Management Dashboard
Fisheries and vessel managers gain a live view of trips, vessel movements, permits, and catch activity—streamlining compliance, audit readiness, and operational oversight.
All solutions were customised and co-designed with fishermen and operations teams through design thinking workshops, ensuring the platform is intuitive, practical, and usable both at sea and on shore.
The Results
- Instant traceability reporting aligned with South Africa’s government standards and MSC requirements, unlocking faster submissions and certification approvals
- 3 days saved per trip in admin and compliance
- MSC certification secured across the fishery
- Expanded market access to France, Germany, Spain, and the USA
The ICV Africa pilot is now a blueprint for the future of fisheries. By harmonising traditional practices with smart digital tools, they’ve improved compliance, boosted profitability, and secured a sustainable future for their operations.
