We are officially a Friend of the Sea!

Sophie Hunter-James
Director – SFS Trace

Seafood Souq was co-founded by Sean Dennis and Sheikh Fahim al Qasimi based on their mutual love for the ocean and belief in the fact that there had to be a better and more sustainable way forward for the seafood industry leveraging the use of technology. Sustainability is at the core of our beliefs at Seafood Souq.

Friend of the Sea was founded by Paolo Bray, Director of International Programs — Dolphin-Safe Project / Earth Island Institute. The Dolphin-Safe Project saved millions of dolphins from death in tuna fishing nets and started the sustainable seafood movement. Now a project of the World Sustainability Organization, an international trademark registered with humanitarian and environmental conservation mission. Friend of the Sea has become the leading certification standard for products and services which respects and protects the marine environment.

We are delighted to announce that we have become the first Friend of the Sea collaborator in the UAE and are excited to be uniting with our shared mission and values to protect our oceans and promote sustainable aquaculture.

Friend of the Sea is the only sustainable fisheries certification programme recognised and supervised globally by a National Accreditation Body; which is why we’re very excited to be a pioneer voice for this mission in the UAE.

“WSO is sharing common sustainability objectives with Seafood Souq and we are sure that this collaboration can achieve important results in strengthening the sustainable food movement in the United Arab Emirates. The country has already undertaken significant steps in this direction and several companies deserve to distinguish on the international and local market by means of a reliable third party certification.”

Paolo Bray, Founder & Director of Friend of the Sea

The Seafood Souq marketplace was created to support the sustainable seafood mission in a number of ways. This online fish market gives full transparency to seafood buyers, giving full visibility on where they are sourcing their seafood from so they can do so responsibly from sustainable aquaculture and responsibly wild-caught fish only from approved sites where fish aren’t endangered or under threat.

For Sellers they are encouraged to produce seafood sustainably and responsibly as for the first time they have a platform to tell their story and full product information is displayed all the way to the end consumer — how the fish was raised, harvested, processed, certifications and more. Not only do the transparencies this marketplace provides contribute to the sustainable seafood mission but through the digitization of the seafood supply chain giving more efficient logistics from Sea to Serving, we are dramatically reducing seafood waste of our global fish stock.

“I hear figures in the region of 20–25% wastage of seafood within the supply chain (This is a global issue, not unique to any one region) it makes me want to stand up to do something about it. We need a more efficient supply chain to minimise wastage and ensure food security, we need to utilise the features that digitisation of the seafood supply chain provides to source responsibly and sustain food sources for future generations.

Through what the team at Seafood Souq have built and continue to develop with our online marketplace and traceability technology, and collaborating with those who share the same mission and values as us, we can address these industry wide issues and in turn, our buyers can know that they are contributing towards a more sustainable future, both in terms of the ocean life, as well as cost savings for their business and a fresher product that they can prove the provenance of to their customers.”
